ASSA ABLOY Touts Mobility, Customized Solutions, Smart Keys & Sustainability

Top ASSA ABLOY executive details access control leader’s strategies in four critical areas.

LAS VEGAS – With the theme of “Securing the building … and beyond,” ASSA ABLOY held a press conference at ISC West to identify its three (really four) areas of focus. President of Access and Egress Hardware Martin Huddart began the proceedings by stepping attendees through some general background information that helped put a proper perspective on ASSA ABLOY’s substantial industry footprint. Among the notable facts and figures were the firm’s 36 brands (including HID Global), 29 technology partners, integrations with 40 other vendors and 100 new product launches since ISC West 2014.

The first area Huddart addressed was mobile access control. He stressed the power and convenience of combining maglocks with Near-Field Communications (NFC)- or Bluetooth-enabled smartphones as a means to gain authorized entry. He highlighted key features of the company’s SEOS platform, and one of the features I really like is the ability to send keys to people digitally. Huddart talked about the accelerating adoption of mobile access, mentioning that Starwood hotel properties are now offering SEOS technology to guests.

The second area discussed was custom designed solutions. Huddart pointed out a significant opportunity for security dealers and integrators to grow their business by delivering specialized access solutions for multifamily dwellings. He noted how suitable the market is for security as a service, cloud-based access offerings that could boost dealers’ recurring revenue streams. As well, Huddart said small businesses are ripe for leveraging their existing intrusion alarm systems to add access functionality. ASSA ABLOY now offers the capability to do just that with some of the leading intrusion panel manufacturers, including Honeywell.

Thirdly, Huddart highlighted the virtues of intelligent key access. He said placing the “brains” within the key itself is paving the way for several emerging applications. It is especially useful for providing electronic access control at remote locations.

Lastly, as a bonus as he put it, Huddart spoke of the company’s push and progress in the realm of sustainability. From locks to power to supplies to readers and beyond, ASSA ABLOY has committed itself to reducing the power needs of all manner of access control devices. Doing so is not only beneficial to the environment, but also saves money. Huddart cited savings of $15 per door per year, which for large system deployments can help an integrator demonstrate ROI and make a security director a hero to the corporate bean counters.
