Possible Scam Artist Targeting ADT Customers in Virginia

A man has approached several homeowners in Petersburg, claiming that he needs to change the batteries on their ADT security systems.

PETERSBURG, Va. – Police here are searching for a man who has been targeting homes with ADT security solutions, asking to change the batteries on their alarm systems.

The man approached several homes in the Petersburg area, addressing homeowners by name and claiming that he works for ADT, WTVR.com reports.

He allegedly tells homeowners that he has to replace batteries in their security systems, and that ADT should have contacted them to inform customers that he was coming.

In one incident, the man told a woman who declined service that she needed to sign paperwork to verify the refusal. He left the consumer’s property after she started taking photos of him and his vehicle.

It is unclear whether the man is an actual ADT employee.

ADT has advised its customers to ask for identification from anyone who claims to work for the company to avoid becoming a victim of a scam.
