Silverline Security Accused of Duping Elderly Vivint Customer

A Utah resident was paying two alarm bills for two years after a Silverline Security representative allegedly tricked her into signing a new contract.

SANDY, Utah – An elderly woman is claiming a Silverline Security representative duped her into paying two alarm bills from separate companies every month.

Vivint customer Doris Moir says that around the time the firm changed its name from APX Alarm, a man knocked on her door informing her of the company’s rebranding. He also claimed that he was there to update the woman’s security equipment, KUTV.com reports.

The man was actually a worker for Silverline Security, not Vivint. During his visit, the representative got Moir to sign what she thought was a work order. However, it was actually a new contract for home monitoring with Safe Home Security, which collects on the alarm contract.

When Moir contacted Silverline to correct the issue, Silverline representatives defended the contract and said Moir knew what she was signing up with a new company.
Moir contacted Vivint about the discrepancy and the alarm firm agreed to stop collecting on her contract for several months while continuing to monitor her home so that she would not be double billed.

Initially, Safe Home Security stood by charging Moir for the second alarm. However, the firm recently decided to give her a full refund for the more than two years she’s been paying on the second alarm system.

This isn’t the first complaint from customers about Silverline Security’s misleading sales team. In 2012, the company faced many complaints in other states. In fact, the alarm firm was cited with 13 counts of engaging in false, misleading or deceptive acts or practices in Louisiana. As a result, Silverline was temporarily banned from conducting business in the state.

Additionally, the firm was fined in Utah for not having properly licensed salespeople. Silverline has also faced lawsuits from Vivint for misrepresentation, as Vivint claims it has received numerous complaints from consumers about Silverline Security salespeople claiming to represent Vivint.
