University of Kentucky Deploys Salient CompleteView VMS

The University of Kentucky has implemented Salient Systems’ CompleteView VMS to help campus police quickly respond to problems to better protect students.

AUSTIN, Texas—Salient Systems, a manufacturer of open-architecture video management systems (VMS), announces the University of Kentucky has implemented its CompleteView VMS.

The school is the largest university in the state, and according to the company, the University of Kentucky is home to 30,000 students, 15,000 employees, three medical centers, 18 residence halls and two major sports facilities.

“With Salient, we have moved into a more flexible and scalable software-based environment for video storage,” says Nathan Brown, deputy chief of UKPD. “This more virtualized environment has allowed us to no longer be so physically reliant on hardware, which requires a lot of upkeep. Now, we can pivot by increasing or decreasing storage without manipulating the entire system as a whole.”

The choice of the CompleteView VMS solution came after the school’s public safety officials examined the market and determined the Salient Systems’ product would help the university to manage its central video management system that includes more than 3,000 cameras.

Salient Systems explains that its solution provides the University of Kentucky Police Department (UKPD) the ability to manage campus-wide monitoring of activities and special events. The system features two large video walls with one located at the campus police’s emergency operations, and another video wall that is located at the school’s 61,000-seat Kroger Field football stadium.

The VMS company points out the software-based approach of CompleteView VMS has helped the university to expand its off-campus network of cameras where hardware installations and bandwidth have been issues. Salient Systems notes the school is able to manage its bandwidth consumption through its Dynamic Resolution Scaling option that automatically scales video resolution at the server level to match the client regardless of whether it’s a desktop, web client or mobile device.

“Large organizations such as the University of Kentucky demand a high degree of scale, flexibility, and power from their video management systems,” adds Sanjay Challa, chief product officer, Salient Systems. “CompleteView is engineered from the ground up to meet those fundamental needs, as well as easily adapt to future needs, as the business of the organization continues to evolve.”
